Verdict Watch: May 20, 2026 — The mid-week numbers have drawn clearer lines between the winners and the strugglers of 2026.
“One film is busy writing history while half a dozen big-budget projects are quietly preparing their exit notes.”
Current Market Snapshot
The Indian box office remains heavily dominated by a single juggernaut, while several expensive films are fighting for survival. Here's how the major releases stand today:
| Film | Lifetime Net | Budget | Ratio | Current Status | |-----------------------------------|------------------|------------|-----------|---------------------------------| | Dhurandhar: The Revenge | ₹1,146.55Cr | ₹300Cr | 3.82x | SUPERHIT territory | | Bhooth Bangla | ₹170.75Cr | ₹120Cr | 1.42x | Average — needs more | | Karuppu | ₹105.35Cr | ₹130Cr | 0.81x | Below Average / Flop zone | | Raja Shivaji | ₹88.10Cr | ₹100Cr | 0.88x | Below Average / Flop zone | | Kara | ₹37.46Cr | ₹100Cr | 0.37x | Disaster territory | | Patriot | ₹31.58Cr | ₹140Cr | 0.23x | Disaster territory | | Athiradi | ₹27.07Cr | ₹80Cr | 0.34x | Disaster territory | | Pati Patni Aur Woh Do | ₹27.00Cr | ₹35Cr | 0.77x | Below Average / Flop zone |
Superhit Territory
Dhurandhar: The Revenge remains in a league of its own. Even on Day 63 it added ₹0.20Cr and crossed ₹1,146Cr India net. At 3.82x its ₹300Cr budget, the film has already secured legendary status. No other release this year comes close to this level of dominance and longevity.
Stuck at Average
Bhooth Bangla (₹170.75Cr net, 1.42x) is the only other film showing some stability. It is profitable but far from a blockbuster. The Akshay Kumar-Priyadarshan combo delivered a safe result, yet it lacks the explosive repeat value needed to push into Hit territory.
Headed for Flop / Disaster
This week’s biggest concern is the cluster of expensive underperformers:
- Patriot (₹31.58Cr at 0.23x) and Athiradi (₹27.07Cr at 0.34x) are among the costliest disappointments.
- Karuppu, Raja Shivaji, and Kara are all stuck below 0.9x despite decent openings.
- Pati Patni Aur Woh Do is also trending toward below-average despite a lower budget.
These films highlight a worrying trend: high budgets and star power are no longer guaranteeing safety in 2026.
Hollywood Snapshot
On the US side, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie ($419.7M domestic, 4.12x) and Project Hail Mary continue their strong runs. Michael is also performing respectably. In contrast, Mortal Kombat II and The Sheep Detectives are struggling badly.
The next 7–10 days will be decisive for several films still fighting to cross their break-even thresholds. Dhurandhar continues to set the benchmark, while the rest are learning hard lessons about what works in today’s theatrical environment.
