Peddi poster

The week of July 20–26, 2026 belonged almost entirely to one film. Jana Nayagan stormed into theatres and rewrote the weekly charts, while the rest of the market continued its familiar pattern of high-budget underperformers and low-budget success stories.

Jana Nayagan’s opening week has completely reshaped the current box office landscape, leaving every other release far behind.

Key Highlights

Film of the Week: Jana Nayagan Thalapathy Vijay’s final film delivered a commanding opening week of ₹92.35Cr. The three-day split (₹42.70Cr + ₹21.15Cr + ₹28.50Cr) shows strong weekday recovery and solid hold. It is the clear market leader by a massive margin.

Disappointment of the Week: Lenin Despite a decent opening earlier, the film has struggled to sustain. This week’s ₹7.06Cr add takes the lifetime total to only ₹47.76Cr against a ₹100Cr budget (0.48x). The steep week-on-week drop confirms fading interest.

Strong Relative Performers

  • Gatta Kusthi 2 continues its remarkable run, adding ₹3.61Cr to reach 8.14x its budget.
  • Idhayam Murali remains highly profitable at nearly 4x.
  • Deool Band 2 and Tumbadchi Manjula continue to deliver excellent returns on small budgets even in their deep runs.

High-Budget Struggles Peddi, Welcome to the Jungle, Alpha, Cocktail 2 and Nagabandham remain trapped well below recovery levels. Their weekly adds have become negligible.

Weekend Snapshot

Jana Nayagan dominated the weekend with a strong Day 3 of ₹28.50Cr. Dhamaal 4 also showed healthy recovery on its Saturday (₹4.50Cr), moving closer to budget. Most other titles posted only marginal figures.

Reality check: The Indian box office this week was a one-film market. Jana Nayagan’s arrival has overshadowed everything else. While low-budget successes continue to shine quietly, the majority of big-budget releases remain far from recovery. Next week will test whether Jana Nayagan can maintain its hold and whether Dhamaal 4 can finally cross its budget mark.

Next Week Outlook

Jana Nayagan is expected to continue leading the charts, though the first major drop will indicate its long-term strength. Dhamaal 4 has a realistic chance of crossing ₹150Cr lifetime net. Most other films are likely to see further declines as the new release continues to dominate screens and audience attention.
