Akshay Kumar has not delivered a bona fide box office hit since OMG 2 in 2023. Bhooth Bangla, releasing April 17, is the most loaded bet he has made in years. And the reason it feels different isn't the budget or the cast โ it's the director.
Priyadarshan and Akshay Kumar made eight films together between 1995 and 2010. Hera Pheri, Bhagam Bhag, Garam Masala, De Dana Dan โ the filmography reads like a greatest-hits of Hindi comedy. Their last collaboration, Khatta Meetha, underperformed. Bhooth Bangla, 14 years later, is the reunion Bollywood has waited for. The question is whether nostalgia alone can carry โน120 crore to profitability.
The Math
โน240Cr India net is a number only three Akshay Kumar films have crossed โ and none since Toilet: Ek Prem Katha in 2017. The horror-comedy genre has historically been generous to him: Bhool Bhulaiyaa (the inspiration for this film) grossed โน103Cr net in 2007. Adjusted for inflation and expanded multiplex reach, โน200Cr+ is achievable โ but it requires consistent weekday legs, not just an opening weekend spike.
What the Advance Bookings Tell Us
As of April 16 โ the day of paid previews โ Bhooth Bangla had sold over 34,000 tickets nationally with advance booking gross crossing โน91 lakh. For context, this pace outstrips Jolly LLB 3 at the same stage, a film that went on to collect โน12.5Cr on Day 1. The late-night paid preview surge is genuine, not manufactured โ key shows in Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore are reporting strong occupancy.
The critical number is not the opening day figure. It's the Week 2 drop. If Bhooth Bangla opens at โน16Cr and holds 60%+ in Week 2, the โน200Cr target is live. If it drops 70%+ โ the pattern of most recent Akshay Kumar releases โ the math collapses fast.
The Priyadarshan Factor
Priyadarshan hasn't directed a commercial Hindi hit in over a decade. His Malayalam output has been inconsistent. But his craft in physical comedy, timing of slapstick, and ability to build genuine comedic set-pieces is unmatched in Bollywood. The CBFC certificate requiring changes to "offensive terms" and "derogatory lines" suggests the film doesn't sanitise the humour โ which is exactly what audiences who grew up on Hera Pheri want.
Tabu's presence is worth noting. She does not take weak projects. Her being here โ alongside Paresh Rawal โ is the strongest signal that the script has substance beyond surface-level haunted house gimmicks.
The Verdict Before Day 1
Bhooth Bangla is Akshay Kumar's best shot at a genuine comeback since 2023. The genre suits him, the director knows him, and the audience has been waiting long enough that the nostalgia capital is real. But the film is 165 minutes long โ nearly three hours โ which is a test of confidence from a director who has never needed that runtime to land a joke.
If the paid previews generate strong word of mouth tonight, the โน200Cr target becomes a question of execution, not aspiration. If they don't, this becomes another chapter in a difficult run.
